Baseball Drops 3-0 Decision To South Florida

STORRS, Conn. (March 31, 2007) — South Florida starting pitcher Chris Delaney notched his sixth win of the season after hurling seven scoreless innings as the University of Connecticut baseball team fell to South Florida, 3-0, Saturday afternoon at J.O. Christian Field.

Delaney (6-0) scattered just five hits while striking out one and walking two.

UConn freshman Dusty Odenbach (Rochester, N.Y.) suffered the loss despite a strong outing on the hill.  Odenbach (1-1) allowed just three runs (two earned) on four hits while striking out four in 5-2/3 innings of mound duty.  Senior southpaw Ted Garry (Rochester, Minn.) pitched the final 3-1/3 innings and held the Bulls scoreless on just four hits.

South Florida (22-8, 6-2 BIG EAST) scored the only three runs of the game in the first two innings of play.  Shortstop Walter Diaz led off the game with a single into right field before advancing to second when second baseman Dexter Butler grounded out to the right side for the second out of the inning.  Third baseman Addison Maruszak delivered a two-out RBI single to right field to score Diaz to give the Bulls a 1-0 lead.

The Bulls tacked on two more runs in the top of the second inning for the final runs of the afternoon.  Designated hitter Nick Cardieri drew a walk to start the frame and advanced to second when right fielder Josh LeRoy followed with a sacrifice bunt.  Catcher Braulio Pardo next plated Cardieri with a single into centerfield.  Diaz later capped the inning with an RBI groundout to shortstop to score Pardo.

UConn and South Florida put the finishing touches on a three-game series Sunday afternoon at 12:00 p.m. from J.O. Christian Field.
