Baseball Tops Louisville 11-10 To Capture Series

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (April 2, 2006) – A 3-for-4 effort from sophomore Pat Mahoney (Des Moines, Iowa), including a home run, guided the Huskies to an 11-10 victory over the Cardinals.  With the win, the Huskies claim the series and improve their overall record to 16-9 (6-3 BIG EAST).  Louisville now posts a 12-16 record and a 4-2 record in the BIG EAST.

The Cardinals took an early lead in the third inning with a two-run home run by Chris Cates to take the advantage 2-0.

UConn responded in the top of the fourth with three runs to take the lead.  Senior Bryan Maler (Ansonia, Conn.) tallied his two RBI of the game off a single through the right side that scored classmate Austin Wasserman (Nashua, N.H.) and rookie Erik Turgeon (Palm Harbor, Fla.).  Mahoney crossed the plate during the next play as Maler was called out at second and junior Dennis Donovan (Center Moriches, N.Y.) reached on a fielder’s choice.

Both teams were scoreless in their next at-bats, but in the bottom of the fifth, the Cardinals scored three more runs to take the lead 6-3.  Louisville scored three runs on four hits while the Huskies committed an error.

At the top of the sixth inning, UConn cut the lead to within one off of single through the left side by Donovan that scored junior co-captain Larry Day (Amesbury, Mass.).

The Huskies took the lead back with four runs in the top of the seventh inning.  Dale Brannon (St. Petersburg, Fla.) was the first Husky on base with a double to left field.  Wasserman flied out to center field during his at-bat for the second out of the inning, but Brannon tagged on the play to move to third.  Turgeon singled through the right side to score Brannon and notch his lone RBI of the game.  Day followed suit with a single to right to put two men on base.  Mahoney homered to left center in his at-bat to record three of his four RBI of the game.

With the score at 8-5, Louisville tacked a run onto their score in each of the next two innings to bring the score within one.

In the top of the ninth inning, UConn scored three more times to bring their run total to 11 for the game.  Turgeon led off the inning with a double down the left field line.  Day singled to center field in the next at-bat to move Turgeon to third.  Mahoney tallied his final RBI of the game with a single to center that scored Turgeon.  Mahoney advanced to second on a throwing error by the catcher on a failed pickoff attempt.  Day advanced to third on the same play.  In the following at-bat, Day scored on a wild pitch and Mahoney moved to within 90 feet from home plate.  Maler walked to load the bases in his at-bat to leave the bases drunk for Donovan.  During Donovan’s time at the plate, Louisville’s pitcher Zach Pitts threw his second wild pitch of the inning to allow Day to score the Huskies’ third run of the game.

Louisville stages a near rally in the bottom of the ninth with three runs of their own, but its efforts were thwarted by senior Joe Smeraglino (Shelton, Conn.) who came in to pitch to the final batter of the inning, causing Daniel Burton to fly out to right and end the game at 11-10.

The Huskies will be back on the diamond at J.O. Christian Field on Tuesday afternoon in a non-conference game with the Hartford Hawks at 3:00 p.m.
