BOSTON – After opening conference play with a split against Tulane in a snow-shortened weekend at J.O. Christian Field, the UConn baseball team returns to the diamond for a pair of midweek contests against Northeastern and Hartford. The Huskies will head to Friedman Diamond on Tuesday, April 5 to challenge the Brookline-based Huskies at 3 p.m. before hosting the Hawks on Wednesday, April 6 at 3 p.m. in Storrs.
UConn (13-12, 1-1 The American) picked up a 9-4 win over the Green Wave in its conference opener on Friday before dropping a 14-5 decision on Saturday. Junior ace Anthony Kay (3-2) picked up his third win of the season in Friday’s win, moving into a tie for 12th on the program’s all-time list.
Connecticut owns a 54-18-1 all-time mark against Northeastern in a series that dates back to the 1923 season. UConn has won five of the last six meetings since the 2009 season, including a 9-1 victory in the last tilt on April 7, 2015. The Huskies are 36-14 all-time against the Hawks since the series began in 1985 with their last win coming in a 9-1 affair on March 26, 2013.
UConn sports a 2-0 mark against competition from the Colonial Athletic Conference in 2016, outscoring William & Mary, 21-3, in a pair of neutral-site wins on March 11-12 in Northridge, Calif.
The Huskies have won three of their four midweek contests this season, most recently topping Boston College, 9-4, at Shea Field.
Through 25 games, Willy Yahn (.324) and Jack Sundberg (.323) rank in the top-10 in the American Athletic Conference in batting average, while senior co-captain Bobby Melley checks in among the top-10 in runs scored (26), RBIs (27), walks (22) and OBP (.412). On the hill, Anthony Kay (48) and Tim Cate (42) are in the top-eight in strikeouts, while freshman RHP Randy Polonia is fifth in the league with three saves.
