Baseball Rolls Over Marist 19-6

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. (April 5, 2006) – The University of Connecticut baseball team escaped the snowy confines of J.O. Christian Field on Wednesday afternoon and defeated the Red Foxes of Marist 19-6.  The non-conference game improves the Huskies’ overall record to 18-9.  The Red Foxes drop to 9-14.

UConn took an early lead in the second inning and never looked back.  The Huskies scored five runs the in the inning that began with an error to put sophomore Pat Mahoney (Des Moines, Iowa) on base.  He advanced to second on a bunt to third base by senior Bryan Maler (Ansonia, Conn.).   Junior Dennis Donovan (Center Moriches, N.Y.) scored Mahoney with a single to left field.  Maler moved to second base on the play.  A double steal put both runners in scoring position.  Junior Matt Untiet (Berlin, Conn.) singled down the left field line to score Maler.  Junior Matt Karl (Wallingford, Conn.) followed with another single to score Donovan.  Junior Josh Farkes (Boston, Mass.) walked to advance the Huskies around the bases.  Senior Austin Wasserman (Nashua, N.H.) hit into a double play during his at-bat, but Untiet scored.  The final run of the inning was scored on a wild pitch.

The Red Foxes scored one run in the home-half of the inning, but their one run would not deter the Huskies.  UConn came back in the top of the third inning and added six more runs to the lead to bring the score to 11-1.  The Huskies scored their six runs on three hits.  

UConn continued to extend its lead with a run scored in each of the next three innings of play.  In the bottom of the sixth inning, Marist tacked four more runs onto its total, but it was not enough to catch the Huskies. 

Connecticut scored five more run on five more hits to bring their game totals to 19 runs and 18 hits.  At the plate, Wasserman went 3-for-6 with four RBI and a run and Farkes batted 3-for-5 with two RBI and two runs. 

On the mound, senior John Slusarz (Farmington, Conn.) threw five innings, allowed three hits and just two runs.  He fanned five of the 23 batters he faced. 

The Huskies will be back on J.O. Christian Field on Friday afternoon as they open a three-game series with BIG EAST rival Villanova at 3:00 p.m.
