    Game Notes vs. Notre Dame

    The UConn baseball team will take on Notre Dame in a three-game BIG EAST Conference series in South Bend, Ind. beginning on Friday.

    This weekend marks the first road series of 2011 for the Huskies in league play. Friday's series' opener is set to begin at 5:35 p.m. (EST) at Frank Eck Stadium. Live stats are available on UConnHuskies.com, while live video (fee) can be accessed through UND.com/allaccess.

    QUICK HITS ON THE UCONN HUSKIES
    • UConn is 15-10-1 on the year entering the weekend and is 5-1 in BIG EAST Conference action. The Huskies swept St. John's last weekend in league play before downing UMass 7-1 on Wednesday afternoon in Storrs, Conn.

    • Leading the way on the hill for the Huskies is Matt Barnes with 54.0 innings thrown and a team-best 49 strikeouts. He also has an ERA on 1.00 in seven starts.

    • The 2011 season marks the 116th season of baseball at the University of Connecticut.

    THROWING THE FIRST PITCH
    UConn's veterans man the hill for the Huskies this weekend as all three starting pitchers for the UConn ballclub have 14 or more career wins, 150 or more career strikeouts and over 189 career innings pitched.

    ON A ROLL
    UConn is currently on a five-game win streak and is 7-1-1 in its last nine games. LJ Mazzilli has registered a hit in each of those nine games.


     

     

    LEADING THE WAY
    George Springer has a team-best 26 RBI this season and has hit three home runs to lead the Huskies in that category as well. Nick Ahmed has scored 24 times, a team-best tally, and has recorded 30 hits on the year.

    Mike Nemeth is batting .340 in 26 games with a team-ghi 36 hits along with five doubles and 20 RBI.

    Despite earning two losses in his first two starts of the season, Matt Barnes has struck out 49 batters in seven games thrown. He struck out 11 batters in UConn's 3-2 loss to Minnesota (2/19) and nine in UConn's 3-1 loss to Indiana. He is currently 5-2 on the year with a 1.00 ERA.

    WEEKLY HONORS
    Nick Ahmed was named BIG EAST Player of the Week on Monday after leading UConn to a 4-0 week including a sweep of conference rival St. John's. The junior hit .429 (6-for-14) with four doubles and a .714 slugging percentage. He also scored seven runs while driving in six. It was his first major weekly honor of the season.

    IN THE RECORD BOOKS
    Mike Nemeth is UConn's all-time leader in hits (274) and doubles (60). Nemeth owns the UConn single-season records for doubles (22), hits (98) runs batted in (84) and games played (64), all of which were tallied in 2010.

    George Springer ranks first in runs scored in the UConn career record books with 178. Springer ranks tied for fourth in home runs with 37 in his career. He is knotted in the fourth spot with Jerry LaPenta (1983-86).

    In UConn's single-season record book, Springer owns the top spot in runs scored with 84 and walks with 60, both of which he recorded in 2010.

    Kevin Vance ranks fourth in career saves with 11. He is seven away from tying Matt Karl's tally of 18 career saves.

    ON THE ROAD AGAIN
    UConn finished the 2010 regular season with a 21-6 record on the road, while being 3-2 in neutral site games. On the year, the Huskies were 7-4 at neutral sites, which includes 2010 BIG EAST postseason play.

    In 2011, UConn is 2-6 in neutral site games and 7-2 on an opponent's home field.
