PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Sophomore catcher Zac Susi and freshman left-handed pitcher Mason Feole received American Athletic Conference Player and Pitcher of the Week honors on Monday afternoon.
Susi (Southington, Conn.) takes home Player of the Week honors after going 9-18 (.500) at the plate in four games played this week. The UConn catcher recorded two doubles, one home run, six RBIs, scored two runs and threw out a pair of baserunners from behind the plate.
On Saturday against Memphis, Susi came up clutch with a go-ahead two-run double down the left field line to give the Huskies an 8-7 lead in the fifth. This came a day after Susi went 3-4 with three RBIs including a two-run homer to extend the UConn lead to 6-2 in the sixth. Susi recorded a multi-hit game in all four games this week to extend his team lead to 12 this season.
Feole (Wakefield, R.I.) helped the Huskies earn a series sweep against Memphis with a dazzling performance on Sunday. The left-hander pitched a career-high eight scoreless innings, allowed four hits, did not walk a batter and struck out five. Feole finished his outing by retiring the last 10 batters that he faced. The eight innings pitched is the most by a UConn starter this season.
The win for Feole moves him to 5-0 on the season. The last pitcher to start a season 5-0 for the Huskies was Jordan Tabakman in 2013.
Feole is the second-straight Husky pitcher to take home American Conference Pitcher of the Week honors after Tim Cate earned the distinction last week.
The Huskies return to the field on Tuesday, April 11 against Bryant at 3 p.m. in Smithfield, R.I. Tune in on 91.7 WHUS FM or online at fm.whus.org
