STORRS, Conn. -- The UConn baseball team (25-15) returns to action this week to continue a nine-game home stand with midweek visits from Massachusetts (11-14) and UMass Lowell (9-19). The Huskies will meet the Minutemen for the 162nd time on Tuesday at 3 p.m. before hosting the River Hawks for the first time in 75 years on Wednesday, also at 3 p.m.
The Huskies are off to a red-hot start in their midweek play, currently 8-2 during the week with a 7-1 mark against New England neighbors. In those contests against regional rivals, UConn has out-scored its opponents by an 86-26 margin and have notched at least seven runs in seven of the games. Connecticut is 87-71-3 all-time against Massachusetts and 1-3 against UMass Lowell, with all four meetings coming between 1931-1940 when the River Hawks were known as Lowell Textile.
UConn has been led at the dish this season by Vinny Siena (Woodbridge, Conn.), who is batting .362 and is eighth nationally with 64 hits. Siena leads UConn with 36 RBIs and has notched 10 doubles and four home runs on the year. Willy Yahn (Sharon, Conn.) is second on the squad with a .348 average while Max McDowell (North Huntingdon, Pa.) tops the team with six home runs and has posted 27 RBIs. Jack Sundberg (Mansfield, Conn.) gets on base at a .428 clip from the leadoff spot and is among the national leaders with 23 stolen bases.
On the mound, UConn holds a top-15 national ERA at 2.78 and leads The American with a .225 batting average against. Andrew Zapata (Staten Island, N.Y.) will start on Tuesday coming off back-to-back stellar performances, spinning seven one-run innings vs. Northeastern on April 7 before tossing seven shutout at Fairfield on April 14. William Montgomerie (Lakeville, Conn.) is scheduled to make his fifth start on Wednesday and holds a 2-1 record with a 2.25 ERA as a starting pitcher this season.
Massachusetts visits Storrs with a record of 11-14 after dropping a three-game Atlantic 10 series to St. Louis. Kyle Adie leads the Minutemen at the dish with a .347 average, while Adam Picard is tops on the squad with two home runs and 15 RBIs. UMass as a team holds a .248 batting average and a 5.20 ERA this season.
The River Hawks, playing their second season at the Division 1 level, enter the midweek with a 9-19 record. Danny Medwick and Ian Strom lead UML at the dish, both batting .356 with 34 RBIs and 21 stolen bases between them. Jimmy Ricoy is the third River Hawk regular batting over .300 at .308 and has clubbed one of the squad's four home runs. On the mound, Lowell has compiled a 5.78 ERA and a .275 batting average against.
Following the midweek contests, UConn stays at home for a three-game league set against Memphis from April 24-26.
