ORLANDO, Fla. – UConn baseball heads to Orlando this weekend for a three-game series against the UCF Knights (27-11, 5-4). UConn sits in a tie for second place in The American with Houston and are only one game back of Tulane in the standings.

UConn/UCF Series

The Huskies are 8-4 all-time against the Knights in a series that began in 2013. UConn is 8-3 in-conference against UCF including three series wins.

The Huskies have had a flair for the dramatic against UCF winning three games against the Knights when trailing in the seventh or later. UConn has also grabbed two walk-off wins in the brief series history.

Last season, the Huskies swept UCF at J.O. Christian Field. Joe DeRoche-Duffin hit a go-ahead two-run homer in the 8th to win the series-opener, 4-3. In the middle game of the series, the Huskies used a nine-run 8th inning to erase an 8-6 deficit and win 15-8. The Huskies completed the sweep behind a stellar performance from Wills Montgomerie. The right-hander pitched six shutout innings, allowed just three hits and struck out eight to record his fourth win of the year.

Scouting Report on the Huskies

The Huskies captured a pair of midweek victories this week over Quinnipiac and UMass. UConn scored a season-high seven runs in the seventh inning of Tuesday's contest to beat UMass 11-3. On Monday, a walk-off RBI double courtesy redshirt freshman Jack Lambrecht won the game 4-3 for the Huskies.

Zac Susi enters the weekend series leading the team with a .324 batting average and 34 RBIs. On the mound, Mason Feole leads all starters with a 2.39 ERA and a 5-0 record.

Scouting Report on the Knight

UCF is having a strong season under first year head coach Greg Lovelady. The Knights are hitting .280 as a team and leads The American with 251 runs scored. Eli Putnam sports a team-best .326 average, with 47 hits and 11 doubles. The Knight’s pitching staff is second in the league with a 2.48 team ERA. Right-hander Juan Pimentel is 6-2 with a 1.90 ERA in nine starts. At 5-4 in conference, the Knights won two out of three at home against Houston to open the conference season. UCF followed it up by being swept by USF and then regrouped to sweep East Carolina.

American Conference

The American finds itself amongst the top conferences in college baseball with a conference RPI rank of five. The eight-team league has seven of its programs in the top 100 of the RPI with Memphis just on the outside at (106). The conference earned three at-large selections two years ago and could be on a similar trajectory this season with four teams in the Top 60 of the latest RPI on Thursday. The league has a better conference RPI than the Big West, Big Ten, Conference USA and West Coast Conference. All leagues notorious for grabbing multiple at-large bids at the end of the year.

UCF currently sits at 22 in the most recent RPI (April 20) and the Huskies at 53.
