Baseball Ends Run At American Championship With 4-2 Setback To East Carolina
The UConn baseball team attempted yet another late rally but ultimately fell, 4-2, to East Carolina on Saturday at Bright House Field. The sixth-seeded Huskies (35-25) end their run at the 2015 American Athletic Conference Championship in the semifinal round, while the two-seed Pirates (39-20) advance to the title game against top-seed Houston.

UConn (20-16, 5-3 The American) enters the weekend having won seven of its last eight games overall, including a 4-2 victory over UMass Lowell on Wednesday in its most recent contest. With a 5-3 mark in The American, Connecticut stands in sole possession of second place and is a half-game behind conference leader Cincinnati (6-3). Since April 10, Connecticut has held opponents to two or fewer runs in six of eight games and has out-scored its foes, 37-to-22.

The Huskies are 6-29 all-time against the Pirates in a series dating back to 1979, including a 2-5 mark in 2015. ECU enters the weekend with a 24-13 overall record, checking in at No. 20 in the most recent D1Baseball.com poll.

With 260 career hits, senior 1B Bobby Melley (Barnstable, Mass.) leads all active NCAA Division I baseball players. In addition to his ranking in hits, Melley currently checks in in the top-10 among all active players in career doubles (fourth - 55) and RBIs (eighth - 151).

UConn enters the weekend at No. 9 in the country with 9.3 K/9 as a staff. Husky trio Anthony Kay, Tim Cate, and Wills Montgomerie have combined for 164 Ks in 134.1 innings pitched (10.99 K/9).

Freshman RHP Randy Polonia (Stamford, Conn.) is tied for third in the conference with six saves in 2016 and currently stands in a tie with Patrick Ruotolo (6, 2015) for eighth on the program's single-season saves list.
