    STORRS, Conn. - For the first time this season, the University of Connecticut baseball team earned a conference weekly award with George Springer (New Britain, Conn.) named the BIG EAST Player of the Week. The freshman outfielder led the Huskies in a 5-1 week with a .520 batting-average (13-for-25).

    Springer set the record for home runs in a rookie season with his 14th against Notre Dame on May 2. He hit three homers and scored 12 runs altogether over six games. Springer finished the week with a double and 10 RBIs, helping the Huskies take two of three against the Fighting Irish.

    He was 6-for-11 (.545) against Notre Dame and recorded at least two hits in all six games during the entire week.

    Springer is among the league leaders with a .347 batting average playing in 44 games in his rookie campaign thus far. He is tied for sixth in the BIG EAST with 54 runs scored and is fifth with 51 RBIs. Springer's slugging percentage (.701) is third in the conference while he is tied for second in home runs (14).

    UConn is tied for eighth with Seton Hall in the BIG EAST with a 10-11 record. The Huskies are 27-21 overall heading into the weekend gearing up to host Pittsburgh in a three-game set starting on Friday, May 8 with a 7:30 p.m. game under the lights of Dodd Stadium in Norwich, Conn. The games on Saturday and Sunday will be played at J.O. Christian Field scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. and 1 p.m., respectively.
