HOUSTON - UConn (24-18, 9-6 American) makes its final regular season road trip of the season traveling to Houston to square off in a first place showdown with Houston (28-16, 9-6).

The Huskies are currently in a five-way tie for first in The American with Houston, Tulane, UCF and USF with three conference weekends remaining (Houston, USF and ECU).

Willy Yahn leads the team with a .323 batting average and has recorded 15 multi-hit games this season for the Huskies. The junior is 10 hits away from 200 in his career. He would become the 19th Husky to accomplish the feat.

UConn/Houston History...UConn is 5-6 all-time against the Cougars in a series that began when both teams joined The American in 2014.

Last year, the Huskies swept the Cougars at J.O. Christian Field to take their first series-ever over Houston. Then the Huskies beat Houston in The American Conference Championship game in Clearwater, 7-2, to clinch their first ever-American Conference Championship.

Feldstein’s Heating Up... The UConn RF is hitting .323 in his last nine games, contributing two doubles, three long balls and 12 RBI’s. This past weekend against the Bearcats, Feldstein hit home runs in back-to-back games and recorded seven RBIs in the series.

Toppa Turnaround ...  John Toppa started the season off on a cold streak but has come on strong over the past couple weeks. Toppa was hitting .122 after the East Carolina series on April 2. Since then the UConn left fielder has raised his average to .270. Toppa has recorded 10 multi-hit games and is batting a team-leading .383 in conference games this season.

Poulin Emerging... The sophomore left-hander is becoming one of the more reliable arms for the Huskies of late. Poulin in his last four appearances, including a start, has a 2.38 ERA in 11.1 innings pitched. The Marion, Mass native picked up his first career win on April 18 against UMass. Working a career-high five innings. On April 30, Poulin logged his first career save, pitching three innings of relief for UConn

Sophomore Sensation... Zac Susi has molded into one of the most consistent hitters for the Huskies to begin 2017. Susi leads the team in RBIs with 35 RBIs after contributing 21 RBIs in his freshman season. Susi has delivered in the clutch this season, compiling two go-ahead hits after the seventh. To open conference play, Susi put the Huskies on top 3-2 in the top of the 10th inning against ECU (4/1) with a two-out, RBI single. Then against Memphis (4/8) Susi hit a go-ahead two-run double down the left field line to put the Huskies ahead for good

Strikeout U... UConn is second in the nation with 10.4 strikeouts per nine innings this season. The Huskies have six pitchers that have more strikeouts than innings pitched this season. UConn has compiled 429 strikeouts through its first 42 games. Tim Cate (7th, 13.01) and Wills Montgomerie (10, 12.59) both rank in the top-10 nationally in strikeouts per nine innings.

Relying on Russell... John Russell has solidified his role as the UConn closer in 2017. Russell has logged 12 saves in 16 opportunities. The right-hander has appeared in 17 games for UConn, logging 27.2 innings and striking out 51 batters. Russell is ahead of Kevin Vance’s single-season record 13 save pace in 2011 with his 12 saves in 42 games. The Glastonbury native also leads the team with 16.87 strikeouts per nine. Russell recorded a career-high eight strikeouts in three innings of work against Tulane on April 15. Russell’s 12 saves is first in The American and T7th nationally. Russell got out of bases loaded, no-out jam in the eighth on April 29 to preserve a 6-4 UConn win. Nine times this year, Russell has pitched more than an inning of relief.
