Huskies Host No. 10 Louisville in Home Finale

STORRS, Conn. - UConn hosts its second ranked opponent in the last four weekends as No. 10 Louisville comes to Storrs, beginning with a Saturday doubleheader at 12:00 pm.

On the Air... Saturday’s contests against the Cardinals will be broadcast on by veteran UConn football and basketball announcers Joe D’Ambrosio and Bob Joyce. All three games will be streamed at and can also be heard on 91.7 FM WHUS.

About the Huskies... Connecticut enters the weekend seventh in the BIG EAST with a 9-12 league mark. The Huskies are 28-21 overall and seeking their ninth 30-win season in program history. Senior second baseman LJ Mazzilli has powered the UConn offense with a .353 average, 40 runs and 40 RBI to go with 23 steals. Redshirt-senior center fielder Billy Ferriter is second in hitting at .297 with 36 runs and a team-leading 14 doubles and 23 steals. Redshirt-sophomore RHP Carson Cross had a bounce-back start against Rutgers last week and enters with a 7-3 record and 2.19 earned run average with 70 strikeouts in 82.1 innings.

Last Time vs. UofL... Lefty Anthony Marzi tossed 8.2 innings and allowed just one unearned run to lead UConn past top-seeded Louisville in the BIG EAST Championship Second Round, 4-1. Marzi surrendered four hits, walked two and struck out five to best BIG EAST Pitcher of the Year Justin Amlung, who gave up all four runs on 10 hits in seven innings. Righty Scott Oberg came out of the pen to record to final out of the game and his ninth save of the year.



Up Next... The Huskies play a mid-week game against Rhode Island at Dodd Stadium at 11:30 am on May 14, as the away team. The regular season comes to a close with a three-game, non-conference series at George Mason, May 16-18.

Starting Cross... Cross’ first 16 appearances in 2012 were out of the bullpen, but each of his last 14 have been starts. When starting games, he is 8-3 with a 1.97 ERA and 85 K’s in 100.1 innings. The Huskies are 10-4 in his starts. Nationally, Cross owns the 11th lowest career ERA among active players with at least 75 innings pitched at 1.88.

Senior Swing... Since April 6, Ferriter is hitting .402 (33-for-82). Over that stretch, he has 12 multi-hit games in 19 played as well as three three-hit games. Ferriter has also doubled nine times and driven in 10 runs. Mazzilli has hit .452 (33-for-73) since dropping to .298 on April 10. In the last 17 games, he has knocked in 15 runs and hit eight doubles.

On the Bases... Connecticut has remained dedicated to its aggressive game plan as the Huskies have attempted 137 stolen bases to the opponents 87. UConn has totaled 105 steals, a .766 success rate, while the Huskies have thrown out 14 opposing runners on the bases. Ferriter and Mazzilli lead UConn with 24 and 23, respectively. The Huskies 105 steals are good enough for 12th in the country and 13th in steals per game, 2.14.

TWI(UConn)B History... Connecticut claimed its first-ever BIG EAST Regular Season Championship with a series win and doubleheader split with Louisville at J.O. Christian Field. George Springer became UConn’s all-time leader in home runs with the 45th of his career in a 7-5 win in game one of the doubleheader on May 14.

BIG EAST Tournament... The 2013 BIG EAST Baseball Tournament will return to Bright House Field in Clearwater, Fla., for a sixth straight season, May 22-26.

Sophomore LHP Anthony Marzi (Berlin, Conn.) tossed 8.2 innings and allowed just one unearned run to lead the University of Connecticut baseball team through a 4-1 win over Louisville in the BIG EAST Championship Second Round at Bright House Field, Friday afternoon.
