CLEARWATER, Fla. - The UConn baseball team earned the fifth seed for this week's BIG EAST Championship at Bright House Field and opens against fourth-seeded USF at 8:00 pm Wednesday night.
The Huskies are participating in their fourth straight conference tournament and 14th overall since the league's inception in 1985. Twice, Connecticut has captured the title; in 1990 and 1994.
Festivities for the BIG EAST Championship will get underway on Tuesday night with the annual home run derby and revealing of the All-Conference Teams. Senior catcher John Sulzicki will represent UConn in the derby.
Senior right-hander David Fischer (Scotia, N.Y.) was named the BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week for the week ending May 20. He matched a career-long outing with eight innings pitched against Notre Dame on Thursday. Fischer also struck out a career-high 10 batters. His previous high was seven. Fischer earned the award on the last week of the regular season, while sophomore LHP Brian Ward won it on the first.
