Mazzilli Named Second Team All-American

SALEM, Va. -University of Connecticut senior second baseman LJ Mazzilli has been selected to the Louisville Slugger/Collegiate Baseball Newspaper All-America Second Team, which was announced on Thursday afternoon.

Mazzilli, a two-time All-BIG EAST First Team pick, and the No. 4 seed Huskies will open play at the NCAA Blacksburg Regional when the team squares-off against No. 1 seed Virginia Tech on Friday at 5:30 p.m. Fans can watch the game on ESPN3 and listen on and WHUS-91.7 FM.

The Greenwich, Conn. native has led the Huskies in virtually every offensive category over the last two seasons. He enters UConn's third NCAA Regional appearance in the last four seasons with a career batting average of .343, 21 home runs, 137 RBI and an on-base percentage of .401. In 2013, he has posted career bests in batting average (.364) RPI (49) on-base percentage (.419) and stolen bases (28).

UConn's career leader with 13 triples, Mazzilli is also second with 293 hits in 209 games. He is hitting .430 (43-for-100) over the last 24 games, getting a hit in 23 of them and enters the NCAA tournament riding a 10-game hitting streak.
