NORWICH, CT (June 5, 2010) - Sophomore starter Sean Gilmartin scattered 10 hits over seven innings to lead top-seeded Florida State to a 6-4 winner's bracket victory over third-seeded Oregon in the 2010 NCAA Division I Baseball Championship Norwich Regional. The contest was played before a crowd of 2,052 at Dodd Stadium.
The Seminoles improve to 44-17 with the win and will await the winner of Sunday's elimination game between second-seeded Connecticut and Oregon in the championship round on Sunday at 6:30 p.m. If Florida State wins that contest, they advance to the Super Regionals. If the Connecticut-Oregon winner wins that game, the same two teams will play again on Monday at 7 p.m. for the regional title. The Ducks and Huskies play the opener on Sunday at 2:00 p.m.
Gilmartin surrendered a first inning home run to freshman Jack Marder, but kept the Ducks off the scoreboard again until after he was relieved after surrendering two hits to start the eighth. Junior Geoff Parker allowed the two inherited runners and one other batter to score in the inning before junior Mike McGee (who had started the game in left field) pitched a scoreless ninth for his 10th save of the season.
Florida State scored an unearned run in the second on a sacrifice fly by freshman Jayce Boyd and a run in the third on back to back doubles by sophomore Sherman Johnson and McGee. Junior Rafael Lopez plated two in the fourth on a single and the Seminoles closed their scoring on solo homeruns by senior Stephen Cardullo (sixth inning) and Johnson (seventh inning).
Oregon (39-23) starter, Tyler Anderson (7-5) went eight innings to take the loss.
