STORRS, Conn. - Right-handed reliever John Russell garnered NBCA/Rawlings Third team All-American honors, as well as, First Team All-Northeast Region, as announced by the organization on Wednesday afternoon.
Russell has received many accolades after a breakout junior season for the Huskies. The San Francisco Giants drafted the UConn closer in the 16th round of the 2017 MLB Draft. Russell earned First Team All-New England and Second Team All-Conference honors after saving a single-season record for the Huskies.
The Glastonbury native led the Huskies with holding hitters to a .196 batting average against. He appeared in 23 games, tossed 38 innings and struck out 66 batters. 13 times, he pitched more than an inning out of the pen for the Huskies. Russell led the team with 15.63 strikeouts per nine innings.
Russell becomes the ninth UConn player to receive All-American accolades since 2010. The Huskies have placed at least one player on the national All-American team for three consecutive seasons.
He becomes the 24th UConn player to earn All-American recognition.
