STORRS, Conn. – UConn baseball Head Coach Jim Penders recently completed the ‘Ice Bucket Challenge’ to help increase ALS Awareness. In addition to completing the challenge by a dumping a bucket of ice water on himself, Penders donated $100 to the Pete Frates #3 Fund.
Frates, 27, is a former Boston College baseball student-athlete who was diagnosed with ALS in 2012 and has since created a fund to raise money for research and raise awareness for Lou Gehrig’s Disease. While with the Eagles from 2004-07, he faced Penders and the Huskies several times.
Penders was called to the challenge most recently by Rutgers Head Coach Joe Litterio, but also accepted previous challenges from Hartford baseball, coached by former UConn assistant Justin Blood, and former UConn pitcher Brendan McGinn. Upon completing the challenge, Penders called on Bryant’s Steve Owens, Rhode Island’s Raphael Cerrato and Sacred Heart’s Nick Giaquinto to participate next.
