STORRS, Conn. --
Head coach Jim Penders and the UConn baseball team began their fall schedule last week with the annual UConn Scout Day at J.O. Christian Field. The Huskies welcomed over 25 major league talent evaluators to Storrs to run the current crop of Huskies through fielding, hitting and pitching drills.

Major league interest in the UConn baseball program is at an all-time high, as a program-record four former Huskies played in the MLB this season. Mike Olt ('10) started the season with the Chicago Cubs, and was soon joined by May call-up George Springer ('11) of the Houston Astros. The Arizona Diamondbacks made Nick Ahmed ('11) the third MLB Husky in August, before the Boston Red Sox brought Matt Barnes ('11) to the show earlier this month. Other Huskies enjoying success in the minors include LJ Mazzilli ('13) and Greg Nappo ('10), who both finished their minor league seasons at the AAA level.

At the 2014 Scout Day, UConn postion players began the day with speed testing before going through positional fielding drills. An extended batting practice session followed, before nearly every member of the Husky pitching staff took a turn to throw with the scouts looking on.

Three current Huskies are former MLB draft picks, as rising redshirt freshman Taylor Olmstead (Greenwich, Conn.) and rising sophomore Anthony Kay (Stony Brook, N.Y.) were drafted by the Texas Rangers and New York Mets, respectively, coming out of high school, but elected to play at UConn. Rising redshirt senior Carson Cross (Brentwood, N.H.) was selected by the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2013 after his stellar redshirt sophomore campaign, but also decided to return to the Huskies. Tom Verdi (Warwick, R.I.) is the most recent UConn draft pick, going to the Seattle Mariners in the 32nd round of the 2014 MLB Draft following his senior season.

UConn continues its fall schedule through September and into early October. The next event is the annual Alumni Game and UConn Baseball Barbecue. For more information and to register, click HERE.
