NCBWA Release
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - University of Connecticut baseball standout George Springer was named to the 2010 National Collegiate Baseball Writer’s Association (NCBWA) Pro-Line Athletic Preseason All-America Second Team as announced on Wednesday.
Springer collected many accolades during his first season with the Huskies in 2009, including being named UConn’s first ever BIG EAST Rookie of the Year. He was also named to the 2009 American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) Northeast Region First Team and was one of 10 position players chosen for the first team as selected by the staff of Baseball America.
The New Britain, Conn. native completed a successful freshman season with the Huskies as he led the team in runs scored (75), home runs (16) and RBI (57), while being third in hits with 76. In his first season at UConn, Springer became one of the Huskies' most successful freshmen in program history as he climbed atop the UConn single-season record book with 16 home runs, the most in a single-season by a freshman. He also earned a spot on the All-BIG EAST First Team, becoming the first UConn player to do so since the 2006 season.
Springer currently holds the school record with the most runs scored in a single-season by any player with 75, while his 16 homers puts him into a three-way tie in third place on the UConn single-season home runs list. He was also named BIG EAST Player of the Week on May 3, 2009, marking the first weekly honor for the UConn ballclub since the 2007 season. He recorded 14 doubles and three triples and walked 32 times, while helping the Huskies to their fourth 30+ win season in the last five years, finishing the regular season 36-24 overall in 2009. Along with his BIG EAST honors, Springer was named a 2009 Pro-Line Athletic/NCBWA Freshman All-American and a Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American.
This year, the NCBWA compiled three preseason All-America teams that include 18 different Division I conferences and 39 different schools. Springer is just one of three BIG EAST players to make the list, joining West Virginia’s Jedd Gyorko on the second team, while Louisville’s Phil Wunderlich earned third team honors.
