TUCSON, Ariz. – University of Connecticut second baseman LJ Mazzilli (Greenwich, Conn.) has been named a 2013 Louisville Slugger Pre-Season All-America First Team selection by Collegiate Baseball News.
Mazzilli, a senior who returned to Storrs after being drafted in the ninth round by the Minnesota Twins in June, is a preseason All-American for the second straight year after being chosen as a first team member by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association in December 2011.
An All-BIG EAST First Team member at the end of 2012, Mazzilli led the Huskies in nearly all major offensive categories; including batting average (.339), doubles (19), home runs (9), runs batted in (38), slugging percentage (.548) and tied for the team lead in runs (43) and finished second in stolen bases (16). His 16 steals were the second highest among first team members his nine homers were the second most among all middle infielders across the three teams.
Mazzilli is the only player representing the BIG EAST on the first team, while pitcher Dan Slania and third baseman Eric Jagielo represent Notre Dame on the third team.
