Five Huskies Earn Preseason All-Conference Honors

PROVIDENCE - With less than two months until the first pitch of the 2016 season, five UConn baseball players were named to The American Preseason All-Conference Team, as announced by the league on Tuesday morning. Anthony Kay (Stony Brook, N.Y.), Bobby Melley (Barnstable, Mass.), Jack Sundberg (Mansfield, Conn.), Willy Yahn (Sharon, Conn.) and Joe DeRoche-Duffin (Santa Ana, Calif.) were honored by the conference, while the Huskies were picked to finish fourth in The American in a vote of the league's head coaches.

In addition to his selection to the All-Conference squad, Kay was named as The American Preseason Co-Pitcher of the Year.


 

 

The Huskies earned 32 points in the preseason poll, including a first-place vote. Houston was picked to win the conference with 48 total points and six first-place votes. UConn begins the 2015 campaign looking for its fourth NCAA Tournament appearance in seven seasons.

Kay, who was selected as the team's Mrs. Mary Dropo Unsung Hero in 2015, put together a stellar 8-6 sophomore season on the hill. One of the most dynamic pitchers in The American, the southpaw finished the season with a 2.07 ERA to place second in the league. He led the conference with a 0.98 WHIP and was also second in the conference with a .202 batting average against. In 100.0 innings, Kay struck out 96 against 25 walks. He was the first player to accept an invite to the 2015 USA Baseball Collegiate National Team and donned the stars and stripes over the summer.

A 2016 co-captain, Melley was one of three Husky players to start in all 60 games in the 2015 season, hitting .315 with 19 doubles and 19 multi-hit games. The slugger drove in 40 runs and hit a stellar .366 with runners in scoring position. In the field, he turned in a .995 fielding percentage. He became the 16th member of the program's 200-hit club when he put together a four-hit afternoon against East Carolina on May 2.

Sundberg earned co-captain honors in late November after serving as the leadoff hitter for the Huskies during the 2015 campaign. An American Athletic Conference Second Team member, the centerfielder hit .287 from the top spot in the order with a .412 on-base percentage. He chipped in 12 doubles, a pair of triples and one home run on his way to an NIEBA All-New England First Team Selection. In 21 multi-hit games, the Huskies posted a 15-6 record. During UConn's four-game run at The American Championship in Clearwater, Fla., the outfielder hit safely in all four games.

A 2015 Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American, Yahn played in 46 games during his freshman season, batting .343 with six doubles, two triples and three round trippers en route to an All-Conference Second Team selection. He added 28 runs scored and four stolen bases while striking out only 13 times in 172 at-bats. The third baseman posted the highest batting average amongst the eight Freshmen All-Americans at his position and placed fifth in The American in hitting.

An ABCA/Rawlings All-Northeast Region Second Team and NEIBA All-New England Second Team member, DeRoche-Duffin earned 50 starts as a junior in 2015, posting a slash line of .271/.416/.541. His 11 long balls were best on the team and he also led the squad in both slugging percentage and OPS. Additionally, he roped 13 doubles and chipped in 39 RBIs to go along with 30 runs scored as the primary designated hitter.

Connecticut begins its 2016 season on Feb. 19 when it opens a three-game set at Texas San-Antonio at Roadrunner Field.
