UConn Head Coach Kevin Ollie

On the first half

“We kind of got off to a slow start, but I liked our energy.  We were just missing shots.  Our energy was good, but they really took over the game with their three-point shooting. “

On how his team responded after halftime

I challenged our guys in the second half to limit their 3-point shooting.  We really challenged them to limit (ECU) to three threes in the second half, and that’s just what they did, amazingly.  That second half is probably the best second half we’ve played, defensively and offensively….Our defense was great.  It was the best communication we’ve had.”

On the play of Daniel Hamilton

“Daniel, at the four in the second half, really gave us a shot in the arm.  It spread the court and it really gave us four guys who can make plays off the bounce.”

On guard Ryan Boatright

“I don’t know what he’s doing, but Boat is shooting great.  We want him to keep it up.”

On the play of Terrence Samuel

“Terrence did an excellent job coming in and running the point a little bit and giving Boat some better looks off the ball. He gave us that little punch that we needed.”
On his team’ passing tonight

“I thought we shared the ball particularly well. It was just a great overall team win.  I’m very proud of the guys.”

Senior Guard Ryan Boatright
“I like to shoot 3’s. The first half I think we gave up like seven 3’s and that’s why they were beating us, and in the second half we just wanted to get up in them and run them off the 3-point line. We made them take contested 2’s.”

“I knew at halftime once I hit that 3 at the buzzer to cut it to seven that we had to come out and jump on it from the beginning because it was a great opportunity to get a win.”

Freshman Guard Daniel Hamilton
“Lately [Coach Ollie] has been telling me to rebound…and once he told me that I’ve been watching film on it and I’ve been rebounding ever since.”

“[DeAndre Daniels] gave me a couple tips on how he played the four-man and he helped me out a lot and that’s transitioned out on to the court.”

Sophomore Guard Terrence Samuel
“I just have to play with more confidence. Coach told me that he believes in me so I just have to go out there and if I’m open I’m going to take the shot and if I see somebody I’m going to swing the play.”

“In practice [Coach Ollie] has been putting me with the ball more because teams have been double-teaming Boat more so in practice he’s been putting more emphasis on me with handling the ball and running plays.”

ECU Head Coach Jeff Lebo
“They shot it well tonight.  So did we.  Boatright was obviously the big difference.  You probably say that a lot up here.”

On what did UConn do defensively in the 2nd half?
“They switched some screening action.  They went smaller against us.  We don’t have a real strong inside game so we’re a very perimeter oriented team.  We missed some shots in the second half.  Terry Whisnant was hurt and couldn’t really play much in the second half.  That hurt us also.  He’s our best scorer.  We couldn’t get to the foul line either.  It was going to be my first time in 25 years as a coach where we didn’t have a foul shot -- until the last minute and a half or two minutes.

Our way to win is trying to shoot the three.  We did a very good job of that in the first half.  In the second half we had some early open looks.  They went on a big run and we missed some open looks that we were making in the first half.

We only had 4 offensive rebounds so we get one shot at it.  In the second half they did a better job of limiting us to one shot. It’s tough to win on the road in any league.  It’s the toughest thing to do.  We haven’t won on the road all year.  We go to these environments and it’s tough.”
