Huskies Have Second Half Comeback To Topple AIC

STORRS, Conn. - Freshman guard Omar Calhoun (Brooklyn, N.Y.) came off the bench to score 24 points -- including 21 in the second half -- and add six rebounds as the University of Connecticut men's basketball team overcame a one-point halftime deficit to post a 78-63 win over American International College in exhibition play on Thursday.

Sophomore guard Ryan Boatwright (Aurora, Ill.) scored 14 points and junior Shabazz Napier (Roxbury, Mass.) added 11 points to add to the Husky effort.

The game marked the head coaching debut of UConn's Kevin Ollie, who took over the reigns of the team from legendary Hall of Fame coach Jim Calhoun. Calhoun was at courtside at press row for the contest.

AIC led the entire first half scored 12 of the game's first 14 points - for a 12-2 lead with 14:19 to go in the half. The Huskies cut the lead to three twice (12-9 and 15-12), but the Yellow Jackets went on a 8-2 run to get the lead back to nine - 23-14 with 6:39 to go.

AIC maintained a eight point lead, 29-21 with 3:10 to go in the half, but the Huskies scored the final seven points of the half for a 29-28 AIC lead at intermission. The run included a three-pointer by Napier with seven seconds to go.

It didn't take long at the beginning of the second half for the Huskies to take control of the game. UConn tied the game at 33-33 on a three-pointer by Boatwright 1:40 into the half and too its first lead, 35-33, on a pair of free throws by junior Tyler Olander (Mansfield, Conn.) with 17:27 to.

The Huskies opened up a double-digit lead , 43-33, with 15:41 to go on a Boatright free throw and led by double digits for the final 11:44 of the contest. UConn's biggest lead was 66-47 with 5:14 to go.

Sophomore DeAndre Daniels (Los Angles, Calif.) had eight points and a game-high nine rebounds. Olander had nine points and eight rebounds.

Senior guard Ricky Hudson led AIC, a Division II school that is a member of the Northeast 10 Conferenc,e with 18 points while junior center David Campbell had 14 points and a team-high six rebounds.

The Huskies conclude their exhibition season on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. against UMass-Lowell at the XL Center. The game is part of the "UConn Family Days" ticket promotion with $5 available.
