STORRS, Conn. - Forward Shonn Miller (Euclid, Ohio) scored a team-best 18 points in his Husky debut to lead the UConn men's basketball team to an 88-72 win over the University of Tampa in the team's 2015-16 exhibition opener on Sunday at Harry A. Gampel Pavilion.
Miller was 8-of-11 from the field and also added six rebounds and a pair of blocks in the win. Sophomore standout and American Athletic Conference Preseason First Team All-Conference Daniel Hamilton (Los Angeles, Calif.) chipped in 10 points and grabbed a team-best eight rebounds, while redshirt-junior Rodney Purvis (Raleigh, N.C.) added 14 points on 5-of-11 shooting.
As a team, the Huskies shot 48.5 percent (33-of-68) from the field and held the Spartans to a 37.3 shooting percentage in the 40-minute contest. The Huskies carried a 36-30 lead into the halftime break and outscored Tampa, 52-to-42, over the final 20 minutes of the contest.
In total, nine different Huskies recorded at least one field goal and five players reached double-figures. On the defensive end, junior center Amida Brimah rejected a game-best four shots.
Sunday's tilt was Tampa's first against a Division I opponent since 2013-14.
