Sophomore point guard Kemba Walker (Bronx, N.Y.) scored 28 points and senior forward Stanley Robinson (Birmingham, Ala.) added 25 points as undermanned Connecticut defeated American International College, 106-67, in a men's basketball exhibition contest Wednesday at the XL Center before an announced crowd of 10,770.
The Huskies, ranked 12th in the preseason AP Poll, played without senior Jerome Dyson (Potomac, Md.), junior Donnell Beverly (Hawthorne, Calif.) and freshman Jamal Coombs-McDaniel (Dorchester, Mass.) due to pending evaluation of recently submitted paperwork pertaining to their eligibility certification.
Walker made nine-of-12 shots from the field and dished out a game-high 12 assists as well. He made three-of-four three-point attempts and added six rebounds for good measure. Robinson made 12-of-16 from the field and added seven rebounds.
The Huskies wrestled control of the contest from the outset, making their first five shots from the field and yanking down the contest's first 13 rebounds. UConn shot 75 percent (21-of-28) from the field in the opening half, and out-rebounded their smaller opponents, 23-5 in the first half.
The Huskies continued their hot shooting after intermission, shooting 62 percent in the second half (21-of-34) to finish the contest at a blistering 68 percent (42-of-62). Connecticut dominated the backboards, winning that battle, 47-19.
Freshman center Alex Oriakhi (Lowell, Mass.) had an auspicious debut for the Huskies scoring 16 points and grabbing a game-high 16 rebounds (11 on the defensive glass.) Senior forward Gavin Edwards (Gilbert, Ariz.) added 17 points and grabbed five caroms.
Aikeem Vanderhorst led the Yellow Jackets with 18 points, while Isiah Wallace added 17.
The Huskies will conclude the exhibition portion of the season on Sunday, when they entertain UMass Lowell at Harry A. Gampel Pavilion. Tip-off is set for 1:00 p.m. and the contest can be heard on the UConn Radio Network.
