HARTFORD, Conn. - Five University of Connecticut men's basketball players scored in double figures as the Huskies topped UMass-Lowell in an exhibition game at the XL Center on Sunday afternoon.
Sophomore guard Ryan Boatright (Aurora, Ill.) had a game-high 22 points and added six assist and five rebounds. Freshman guard Omar Calhoun (Brooklyn, N.Y.) had 20 points - with a five-for-six effort from three-point range.
Sophomore forward DeAndre Daniels (Los Angles, Calif.) had 15 points and 14 rebounds for a double-double and junior Niels Giffey (Berlin, Germany) came off the bench to score 12 points and add three rebounds. UConn's final double-figure scorer was junior Tyler Olander (Mansfield, Conn.) had ten points and four rebounds.
UConn opens the regular season on Friday, November 9 against Michigan State in the Armed Forces Classic at Ramstein Air Base in Ramstein, Germany. The game will start at 5:3 p.m. Eastern time and will be televised nationally by ESPN.
UConn shot 53.4 percent from the field (31-58) while the River Hawks were at 31.4% (22-70). UConn won the rebounding battle 52-34 and hit on nine of 21 three-point attempts.
The River Hawks stayed with the Huskies for much of the first half as the game was tied four times during the first half, including a 27-27 with 7:09 to go. The Huskies then scored eight of the game's next nine points. Boatright had four of those points while Daniels had three. Connecticut kept the pressure on in the first half and led by 16 at halftime by a 49-33 count by scoring the final five points of the half.
It was pretty much all UConn in the second half as the Huskies opened up a 20-point lead, 53-33, with 19:06 to go on a pair of free throws by Calhoun. The Huskies maintained a double-digit lead the entire half and led by 20 or more from 14:09 to the rest of the game.
UConn led by 30 or more for the final 5:23 and its biggest lead was 41, 100-59, with 1:51 to go.
Akeem Williams led UMass-Lowell with 19 points and Antonio Bivins had 16. Parris Massey came off the bench of six rebounds.
