STORRS, Conn. - Senior forward Stanley Robinson (Birmingham, Ala.) had a perfect shooting night on his way to a game-high 18 points, helping No.12 nationally-ranked Connecticut to a 77-63 victory over Colgate in the 2009 Dick's Sporting Goods NIT Season Tip-Off North Regional First Round game Monday evening at the Harry A. Gampel Pavilion.
The win pushes the Huskies record on the season to 2-0 and sets up a second round matchup on Tuesday evening against Hofstra, a 68-63 victor over Yale. The game is set for a 7 p.m. tip-off and the contest will be televised by MyTV9 and SNY. The winner of that contest advances to the semifinals on November 25 in Madison Square Garden in New York City.
Robinson made all eight of his field goal attempts as the Huskies shook off a slow start to earn the win. The Red Raiders, behind the shooting of Kyle Roemer, led 29-24 with 3:11 to play before intermission. UConn asserted itself in the game when sophomore point guard Kemba Walker (Bronx, N.Y.) made a jump shot and senior guard Jerome Dyson (Potomac, Md.) added two free throws to cut the lead to one. Mitch Rolls drilled a three-pointer for Colgate, but freshman Jamal Coombs-McDaniel (Dorchester, Mass.) answered right back with a three of his own. Senior forward Gavin Edwards (Gilbert, Ariz.) dunked off of a pass by Walker to give the Huskies the lead at the half, 33-32.
The Huskies put the game away during the early stages of the second half. Connecticut went on a 30-10 run as Edwards scored 10 points and Walker added eight to obtain firm control of the contest.
Robinson has now made 15 of his first 22 shots this season, a sizzling 68 percent. Remarkably, he trails Edwards in this statistic. Edwards, who was seven-for-eight in Monday's win, has made 10 of his first 11 shots from the field and is shooting an incredible 91 percent from the field. Edwards finished with 14 points, five rebounds and three blocked shots.
Walker scored 16 points for the Huskies, and shared game-high assist honors with Dyson recording six. Dyson, the Huskies' leading scorer suffered through an off-shooting night (making just three of 15 attempts), but finished with 10 points.
Coombs-McDaniel added 11 points (10 before halftime) and made three treys.
The Huskies forced the Red Raiders into 19 turnovers which were converted into 27 points and they scored 38 points in the paint.
Mike Venezia led Colgate with 17 points while Roemer and Yaw Gyawu added 12 points apiece.
