PROVIDENCE, RI (January 14) University of Connecticut freshman center Emeka Okafor (Houston, TX) was named the Co-BIG EAST Rookie of the Week as announced by the league office on Monday. Okafor shares the honor with freshman guard Chris Thomas of Notre Dame.
Okafor averaged 9.0 points, 6.7 boards and 5.0 blocks in a 2-1 week. He had 11 points, eight rebounds and tied his career high with eight blocks in a 69-67 loss to No. 5 (AP) Oklahoma. He also had 11 points in UConns 95-60 win over Virginia Tech, and led the Huskies with eight rebounds in Sundays 70-65 victory at Villanova to help Connecticut to its fifth 4-0 start in the BIG EAST in school history. Okafor is first in the league with a 3.7 blocked shot average. Thomas helped the Irish to a 2-0 week by averaging 11.0 points, 6.0 assists and 5.5 rebounds. He had 15 points and eight assists in a 67-64 win at West Virginia. Thomas leads the BIG EAST in assists with a 6.5 average.
