Following a stellar week in which he led UConn to a pair of victories, senior guard Shabazz Napier (Roxbury, Mass.) has been named the American Athletic Conference Player of the Week for the third time this season.

Napier is one of only two players, along with Cincinnati’s Justin Jackson, to win the award three times this year. Napier has also been named to the conference’s weekly Honor Roll on six other separate occasions. SMU’s Ben Moore was named the Rookie of the Week.

In wins over Temple and Rutgers, Napier averaged 26.5 points, 5.0 rebounds, 5.0 assists, and 1.5 steals. He shot 50 percent from the field, 46.7 percent from three-point range, and 93.3 percent from the foul line.

Napier had 27 points, 7 rebounds, and 6 assists in Tuesday’s 90-66 victory over Temple, then added 26 points (20 in the second half), 3 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 blocks and 3 steals in Saturday’s 82-71 win at Rutgers.

For the season, Napier leads UConn in scoring (17.8), rebounding (6.0), assists (5.9), steals (1.95), and minutes played (34.7).  In conference games, he is the league’s leading scorer (21.9 ppg).

He was also named the AAC Player of the week on Nov. 25 after wins over Boston College and Indiana and on Dec. 9 following victories against Florida and Maine.
