American Athletic Conference Release
STORRS, Conn. – For the third-straight week, a UConn men’s basketball player has been named American Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week – this time, it is freshman guard Christian Vital for his outstanding play.
The Huskies (10-11, 5-4 American) went 2-0 this past week against USF and Tulane, as part of a current three-game winning streak, due in large part to the play of Vital. It is the first collegiate award of his career.
Vital averaged 15.5 points, six rebounds, three assists and three steals in the pair of conference matchups. He scored a career-high 17 points against USF, sinking a career-best five three-pointers (5-of-7) in the process.
With UConn trailing in the second half against the Green Wave, Vital helped lead the charge back with his first-career double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds – a season-high.
Not only did Vital’s offensive prowess prove effective, but his career-high five steals against the Bulls on Wednesday led UConn to a 22-7 advantage in points off turnovers.
In nine conference games, Vital is averaging 9.1 points per contest and is shooting 42.2-percent from the field. In the last four games, he is shooting 47.4-percent (9-of-19) from three-point range.
Sophomore guard Jalen Adams was named to the AAC Honor Roll this week, averaging 14 points and nine assists in games against USF and Tulane. His 6.7 assists per game this season are seventh-most in Division I.
Adams posted his fourth double-double of the season in the 81-60 victory over the Bulls, scoring 20 points and matching a career-best with 12 assists.
UConn returns to action on Saturday when they play at No. 14 Cincinnati (19-2, 8-0 American). Tip-off is at 4 p.m. on ESPN2.
