Butler Named BIG EAST Player of the Week

PROVIDENCE, RI (February 25, 2002) University of Connecticut sophomore forward Caron Butler was named the BIG EAST Player of the Week as announced by the league office on Monday.

Butler averaged 25.5 points and 6.0 rebounds in a pair of wins that clinched the East Division for the Huskies. Butler had 23 points and six rebounds in the win at Georgetown and followed that up with 28 points, six rebounds, four steals and three assists in the rout of West Virginia. He shot 20-of-39 in the two games, a 51.3% clip.

Earlier this season, Butler was named the Co-BIG EAST Player of the Week along with Pittsburgh junior guard Brandin Knight. That honor came after Butler helped guided the Huskies past Virginia Tech on Jan. 2 as he tied his career high in points with 29. He also helped lift UConn over then-21st ranked Miami with 18 points in a 76-75 victory on Jan. 5.
