PROVIDENCE, R.I. --- For the second time this season, the UConn men’s basketball program has swept the American Athletic Conference weekly awards as sophomore Rodney Purvis (Raleigh, N.C.) was named Players of the Week, and freshman Daniel Hamilton (Los Angeles, Calif.) was named Rookie of the Week, the league announced today.
It was the first Player of the Week honor for Purvis, who had a stellar week as the Huskies posted wins over East Carolina and No. 21 SMU. The 6-4 sophomore guard averaged 20.0 points, and 2.5 assists in the two games, including a career-high 28 points against SMU, to go with three assists, three steals, and a perfect 7-of-7 from the foul line. In his last six games, Purvis is averaging 16.0 points per game.
Hamilton won Rookie of the Week for the second consecutive week and the fourth time this season after averaging a double-double of 12.5 points, 12.0 rebounds, and 4.0 assists in the two UConn victories. Against East Carolina, he snagged 17 rebounds, the most by a UConn freshman in 36 years, to go with 9 points and 5 assists, while against SMU he scored 16 points, 14 in the second half, and hauled in 7 rebounds, with 3 assists. He was also named Rookie of the Week on Nov. 24, Jan. 26 and Feb 23. The four honors for Hamilton ties East Carolina’s B.J. Tyson for most this season.
UConn also swept the awards on Nov. 24, when Ryan Boatright (Aurora, Ill.) was Player of the Week and Hamilton won his first Rookie of the Week award.
Also named by the conference to the Weekly Honor Roll this week are Cincinnati’s Octavius Ellis, Houston’s Devonta Pollard, Temple’s Quenton DeCosey, Tulane’s Louis Dabney, and Tulsa’s Shaquille Harrison.
