STORRS,Conn. -- The University of Connecticut men's basketball team was selected as the ninth-seed in the South Region and will play eighth-seed Iowa State in Louisville, Kentucky in the Second Round round of the 2012 NCAA Tournament. The game will take place on Thursday, March 15 at the KFC Yum! Center, the home court of the Louisville Cardinals.
The Huskies concluded the 2011-12 regular season with a 20-13 record and most recently fell to Syracuse in the BIG EAST Quarterfinals. The winner of the UConn-Iowa State game will take on the winner of overall No. 1 Kentucky and Mississippi Valley State/Western Kentucky on Saturday, March 17.
All game times and television plans are still to be announced.
The Cyclones ended the season with a 22-10 overall mark and were third in the Big 12. No. 25 Iowa State was upset by Texas in the Big 12 Tournament Quarterfinal, 71-65, on Thursday.
The Cyclones average 73.2 points per game as they shoot 38 percent from behind the arc and on average take 23.3 three's per game. Outscoring opponents by 6.5 points, Iowa State shoots 44.9 percent from the field and an impressive 68 percent from the charity stripe.
The team is led by forward Royce White who averages 13.1 points and 9.2 grabs per game, while leading the team in blocks (30) and steals (37). The Cyclones also have guard Scott Christopherson knocking in 12.5 points per game and guard Chris Allen notching 11.8 points per game.
