STORRS, Conn. - University of Connecticut students who purchased tickets for the 2014 NCAA Men's Basketball Championship East Regional this weekend received a $50 discount through a cooperative effort between the Division of Athletics and UConn's Undergraduate Student Government.
Student tickets for the regional are priced at $200 apiece and were sold on a lottery basis. The discount now means the price of the tickets will be $150.
"I am very pleased that we could offer this discount with the efforts of USG to provide our loyal students this price reduction," said UConn Director of Athletics Warde Manuel. "I want to publicly thank all of the members of USG for their support for helping their fellow students attend the games at Madison Square Garden."
"We felt that it was important that the USG support students who wanted to show pride in their team and the University," said USG President Ed Courchaine. "Everyone who worked so quickly to move the pieces into place has my deepest gratitude for making this opportunity more accessible for my fellow students."
UConn, which plays Iowa State in the regional semifinals on Friday at 7:27 p.m., received a total allocation of 1,250 package tickets from the NCAA for the event. The packages also include a ticket to Sunday's East Regional final.
In other years that the Huskies have advanced to NCAA regional play, UConn allocated 100 of its tickets for students, but increased that number to 200 this year due to the proximity of Madison Square Garden. The 200 tickets have all been sold as of Wednesday afternoon.
