UConn senior-to-be Niels Giffey (Berlin, Germany) is combining business and pleasure as he gets the chance to travel throughout Europe during his summer vacation. The 6-7 guard-forward is enjoying himself while working on his game as a member of the German Senior National Team.
The German team is currently playing in a series of preparation games against the best teams in Europe as it gets ready to compete in 2013 EuroBasket, the European Championship tournament, which begins on Sept. 4.
Giffey, 22, has played in eight games so far, averaging 7.5 points per game as Germany has posted a 5-3 record with two wins each against Slovakia and Portugal and another against Croatia. The three losses have been to France (twice) and Greece.
Giffey’s best game to date came in Germany’s first loss to France on Aug. 6, when he led the team with 13 points, although playing against the likes of NBA players Nicolas Batum and Tony Parker.
The German team will play five more preparation games in August – against Spain, Bosnia, Macedonia, Greece, and Sweden --- before it travels to Slovenia on Sept. 2 to start 2013 EuroBasket.
Germany will compete in Group A in the tournament, grouped with France, Belgium, Ukraine, Great Britain and Israel. After a round robin schedule against the other teams in Group A from Sept. 4-9, the top three teams of the group will advance to the next round. Germany opens tourney play on Sept. 4 against France.
Giffey, one of three holdovers from the UConn NCAA national championship team of 2010-11, has played 99 games for the Huskies, starting 15, averaging 3.1 points, 2.0 rebounds, and 13.5 minutes per game.
