STORRS, Conn.- The University of Connecticut men’s and women’s basketball teams kicked off the 2012-13 season with First Night on Friday evening at Gampel Pavilion in front of approximately 6,000 fans.
“We had a great preseason from day one this year. I think that has made all the coaches and players feel really anxious to get started,” Head Coach Geno Auriemma stated about the start of practice.
Fans were treated to an eventful evening that started with both teams signing autographs before the start of the program. Next up was an exciting showing by Acro Dunk and NBC’s “The Voice” contestant and Connecticut’s own Avery Wilson to get the crowd ready for the team introductions.
The lively crowd was then introduced to this year’s squads who were joined at center court by platinum recording artist Bobby V who performed three of his hits for everyone.
Both teams had three Huskies compete in the three-point contest but it was sophomore Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis taking home the crown with 20 made shots from behind the arc. Eleven UConn students had the chance to test their skills against both teams with a 33-man game of Knockout with Connecticut fan Jeff taking the title in a last chance winner-take-all shot.
