UConn is coming off its fifth-consecutive 20-win season (20-15) with an appearance in the NIT in 2014-15. Earlier this week, the team earned a pair of first-place votes in the American Athletic Conference Preseason poll, checking in at No. 2 with 87 points. Freshman guard Jalen Adams (Roxbury, Mass.) was selected as the league's Preseason Rookie of the Year, while Daniel Hamilton (Los Angeles, Calif.), Amida Brimah (Accra, Ghana) and Sterling Gibbs (Scotch Plains, N.J.) earned spots on Preseason All-Conference teams.
Kevin Ollie returns to the sidelines for his fourth season as head coach and will look to build on his 72-33 (.686) career record that has him tied for sixth-place on UConn's all-time coaching wins list. His .686 winning percentage is good for fourth-best in program history.
For Tampa, Sunday's battle will mark its first exhibition game against a Division I opponent since the 2013-14 season when it fell, 61-59, to Stetson.
The Spartans finished 18-10 in 2014-15, bowing out to Nova Southeastern in the SSC Tournament held at Silver Spurs Arena in Kissimmee, Fla. last March. Head coach Richard Schmidt is in his 33rd year as head coach and has compiled a 631-308 (.672) overall record.
Since Gampel Pavilion opened in 1990, the Huskies sport a 160-29 (.847) overall record at their on-campus facility.
