STORRS, Conn. – Basketball season will officially begin on Friday night in Gampel Pavilion, as head coach Kevin Ollie and the UConn men’s team hosts the Colgate Raiders in the season-opener at 7 p.m. (ET), live on SNY.
Coming off three exhibition games against Providence, Merrimack and Queens College, the Huskies get their first taste of regular-season action when their Patriot League foe comes to town. UConn/IMG Radio Network will be broadcasting the action.
Friday will be Military Appreciation Day at UConn, with Tickets for Troops available through UConn’s partnership with Vet Tix. Video montages will be played throughout the game of UConn fans who have served or are currently serving around the world.
Fans can purchase additional tickets to the game HERE, with the money being donated to a military family through Vet Tix. UConn Husky camouflage hats will be distributed to fans while supplies last.
The Huskies pounced on Queens College Sunday, cruising to a 100-43 victory in the final tune-up before the season-opener. Freshman Josh Carlton scored a game-high 20 points, while the UConn defense forced 28 Knights’ turnovers.
Junior guard Jalen Adams, an All-AAC First Team selection as a sophomore, leads UConn heading into the season. Redshirt junior Terry Larrier and redshirt freshman Alterique Gilbert make their returns from injury to add a spark for the Huskies.
UConn is 18-7 all-time against Colgate in a series that dates back to World War II (1943-44 season). The Huskies have won seven straight against the Raiders, with their last loss to Colgate coming in 1972.
The Raiders posted a 10-22 (8-10 Patriot) record during the 2016-17 season, losing to runner-up Lehigh in the Patriot League Tournament quarterfinals. However, Colgate returns an experienced team – made-up of five juniors and five seniors. All three top scorers return from a year ago, including Will Rayman (14.6 ppg).
Head coach Matt Langel has ties to American Athletic Conference member Temple – having served as an assistant coach for five seasons under head coach Fran Dunphy from 2006-11.
START OF THE HOME SLATE
UConn is scheduled to play 16 home games in the 2017-18 season, including seven against non-conference opponents. The Huskies begin the year with three straight home games against Colgate (Nov. 10–Gampel), Stony Brook (Nov. 14–XL) and Boston University (Nov. 19–XL).
Eight newcomers have the chance to make their official debuts in a UConn uniform on Friday night, including freshmen Josh Carlton, Tyler Polley and Isaiah Whaley – who all saw significant minutes in the exhibitions. Transfers Antwoine Anderson and Kwintin Williams are also likely to debut.
