EAST HARTFORD, Conn. -
The University of Connecticut football team ended its spring practice on Saturday with the Blue team posting a 13-3 win over the White team at the annual Blue-White Spring Game on Saturday at Rentschler Field before a crowd of 3,500.
The Blue team was paced by redshirt quarterback Bryant Shirreffs (Jefferson, Ga.), who was 13 of 24 in the air for 168 and a touchdown. Shirreffs transferred to UConn from North Carolina State and sat out last season due to NCAA transfer rules.
Shirreffs also rushed the ball for 25 yards for the Blue while redshirt sophomore Josh Marriner had 24 yards of rushing.
The Blue opened up a 10-point halftime lead with two scores in the second quarter. Shirreffs connected with redshirt senior tight end Sean McQuillan (Glastonbury, Conn.) on a 41-yard touchdown pass with 11:09 left in the half to cap an eight play-85 yard drive. McQuillan had four receptions on the day for a total of 76 yards.
Junior Brian Lemelle (Harrsiburg, Pa.) also had four receptions for the Blue for 31 yards. Redshirt junior Bobby Puyol (North Palm Beach, Fla.) made it 10-0 Blue at the half with a 34-yard field goal as time expired.
Puyol then scored the White's first point of the game as he hit on a 34-yard field goal with 6:06 left in the third quarter.
The scoring concluded with a 22-yard field goal for the Blue team by redshirt sophomore Will Rischell (Hebron, Conn.).
The White team was led by junior quarterback Tim Boyle (Middlefield, Conn.), who was 10-of-19 in the air for 63 yards. True freshman QB Tyler Davis (Bellmore, N.Y.) was six for 14 for 53 yards.
Redshirt freshman Jason Thompson (Shelton, Conn.) came on late with three carries for 47 yards to lead the White team in rushing. Sophomore Arkeel Newsome (Ansonia, Conn.) had four receptions for 26 yards.
Defensively, sophomore Vontae Diggs (Downers Grove, Ill.) led the White with seven tackles while redshirt sophomore Junior Joseph (Sinking Springs, Pa.) had nine for the Blue. Redshirt junior Obi Melinfonwu (Worcester, Mass.) of the Blue team had the game's only interception.
The Huskies open the 2015 season on Thursday, Sept. 3 when they host FCS power Villanova at Rentschler Field.
