EAST HARTFORD, Conn. - The White team, comprised of defensive players, defeated the Blue team of offensive players by a 46-37 score at the annual University of Connecticut Blue vs. White Spring Game played before an estimated crowd of 6,500 at Rentschler Field.
The game, under first year head coach Bob Diaco, was played under a scoring system that featured scoring plays for both offensive and defensive players. There were new features to the pregame routine including a new route for the pregame Husky Walk and the players entering the stadium for pregame warmups through the student section.
On the field, most of the playing time was split between the three quarterbacks who each started three games last year. Senior quarterback Chandler Whitmer (Newnan, Ga.,) was 19 of 26 in the air for 163 yards and a touchdown while redshirt sophomore quarterback Casey Cochran was 10 of 20 for 91 yards and an interception. Redshirt sophomore Tim Boyle (Middletown, Conn.) was seven of 14 for 97 yards.
A slew of 16 different players had receptions on the day with redshirt freshman Quinn Thompson (Edinboro, Pa.) leading the way with five for 37 yards. A group of three had four receptions each - sophomore Noel Thomas (Norwalk, Conn.), redshirt junior Kamal Abrams (Dover, Del.) and redshirt freshman tight end Tommy Myers (Coventry, Conn.).
Redshirt senior B.J. McBryde (Beaver Falls, Pa.) had two tackles for a loss and a sack. Other sacks were by redshirt freshman Foley Fatukasi (Far Rockaway, N.Y.), redshirt senior Angelo Pruitt (Cincinnati, Ohio) and redshirt junior Kenton Adeyemi (Wethersfield, Conn.).
The White team took a commanding 20-8 lead after the first quarter paced by a pair of three-and-outs, which were worth four points each. The White led at the half 29-23 and 39-29 after the third. The Blue made it tight end at the end getting the score to 39-37 on a 11-yard TD run by redshirt freshman Joshua Marriner (Chesapeake, Va.). The White team clinched the win by forcing a field goal to earn one point and a fumble recovery woth six.
The Huskies open the 2014 season on Friday, August 29 when they play host to BYU at Rentschler Field at 8:00 p.m. The game will be nationally televised by ESPN and heard on the IMG UConn Sports Radio Network.
