EAST HARTFORD, Conn. - The University of Connecticut football team held their annual Blue vs. White Spring Game this afternoon, with the Blue team earning a 16-14 victory. The win came after sophomore Blaise Driscoll (Avon, Conn.) connected with classmate Teddy Baker (Longmeadow, Mass.) on a two-yard touchdown pass as time expired.
The White team posted the first points of the game as sophomore Taylor Mack (Powder Springs, Ga.) had an interception in the middle of the first quarter and ran it back 41 yards for the touchdown. Dave Teggart (Northborough, Mass.), who was three-for-three on extra points this evening, was successful on his first try to give the White team a 7-0 lead.
The Blue team answered with just under three minutes left in the second quarter as redshirt sophomore Chad Christen (Etters, Pa.) connected on a 43-yard field goal attempt to make it 7-3 White.
Redshirt senior Gary Wilburn (Washington, Ga.) opened the third quarter with a 26-yard interception return to regain the lead for the Blue team at 10-7. Four minutes later, senior D.J. Shoemate (Corona, Calif.) gave the White team a 14-10 lead as he had a 24-yard touchdown run.
Both teams were quiet throughout the remainder of the third period and for the majority of the fourth period, as the final points of the evening were posted by Baker as time expired for the 16-14 Blue victory.
The winning drive started with the Blue team having the ball at its own 24 with 6:11 of running time left. Sophomore tailback Jordan Huxtable (St. Charles, Ill.) rushed the ball on the first five plays of the drive to pick up 29 yards and put the ball at the White 47. Driscoll then hooked up with junior wide receiver Nick Williams (East Windsor, N.J.) on a 41-yard pass play that put the ball at the White six. Three more rushes by Huxtable put the ball at the White two on fourth down to set up the winning play.
Driscoll was two-for-three for 43 yards on the day, while senior Johnny McEntee (Fullerton, Calif.) was four-for-eight for 29 yards with one interception while playing for the Blue and two-for-eight for 22 yards with the White.
Redshirt freshman QB Scott McCummings (Natick, Mass.) was one-for-seven in the air for the Blue and missed both his passes for the White. Freshman Michael Nebrich (Burke, Va.) was one-for-three for the White team and one-for-two for the Blue team.
Redshirt freshman Lyle McCombs (Staten Island, N.Y.) had 66 rushing yards, along with classmate Byron Jones (New Britain, Conn.) who had 33 yards rushing. Baker and Reuben Frank (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) each had two receptions during the game.
The Huskies will begin the 2011 season on Thursday, Sept. 1 when they host Fordham at Rentschler Field.
