EAST HARTFORD, Conn. - Junior running back Ron Johnson (Naples, Fla.) carried the ball nine times for 105 yards, including a 63-yard TD run in the second quarter, to lead the Blue team to a 28-3 win over White in the UConn Spring Football Game on Saturday before a crowd of 5,500 at Pratt & Whitney Stadium at Rentschler Field.

Junior tailback Arkeel Newsome (Ansonia, Conn.) opened the scoring with a three-yard TD run 6:30 into that game that capped an 11 play-70 yard drive for the Blue.

Johnson's TD put the Blue up 14-0 and the White scored with 11 seconds left in the half on a 47-yard field goal by redshirt senior Bobby Puyol (North Palm Beach, Fla.) - who kicked for both teams.

Senior quarterback Garrett Anderson (Walnut Creek, Calif.) scored the only TD of the third quarter on a six-yard run that finished off an eight play-55 yard drive for the Blue.

Redshirt sophomore linebacker Jason Thompson (Shelton, Conn.) had the final score of the game on a 10-yard TD run with 14:53 to play. The highlights of that drive were a 48-yard pass from Anderson to sophomore Hergy Mayala (Montreal, Que.) and a 26 yarder to redshirt sophomore Billy Williams (Knoxville, Tenn.).

Anderson passed for 177 yards in the game for the Blue team and another 14 for the White. Junior Bryant Shirreffs (Jefferson, Ga.), the Huskies' starting QB for all but one game last year, was nine of 12 in the air for 95 yards.

Redshirt freshman QB Tyler Davis (North Bellmore, N.Y.) was 10 of 17 for 83 yards.

Sophomore Tyraiq Beals (East Orange, N.J.) of the White team had six receptions to lead the game while redshirt freshman Frank Battle (Miami, Fla.) had five.

Senior cornerback Javon Hadley (Miami, Fla.) led the game in tackles with nine for the Blue team while redshirt junior Cameron Stapleton (Staten Island, N.Y.) had five tackles with two sacks - also for the Blue.

The Huskies open the 2016 season on Thursday, Sept. 1 when they play host to Maine in East Hartford.
