Coach Paul Pasqualoni
On Chandler Whitmer:
I think that probably from a media standpoint chandler had a productive day. He really did. He made some good decisions. He made on in particular though that I know he’d like to have back. He had a productive day. He threw fairly accurately to hit the open receiver. He had a good day, his team won, so I’m sure he’s feeling good right now.
What stood out the most for you today between all the guys?
I thought the kids competed hard. I thought Ryan Wirth on the defensive line kind of collapsed the pocket. He played pretty solid against the run and pass. I think inside, we’ve got to replace Kendall Reyes who’s going on to the NFL and Twyon Martin who were good players for us. I think one of the highlights of the day was how hard the inside guys competed.
Where do you go from today?
We grade the film, obviously. This is cumulative. So we have to put together the whole spring. 15 practices, 3 scrimmages. We’ll take a good look at it and get ready for the guys to take their finals and come back in four weeks to start their summer program. Then we get to start this process all over again. We’ll start up, the quarterback competition will start all over again and once we get into preseason camp and it’s clear, then we’ll make a decision. We won’t make a decision right now.
Chandler Whitmer, #10, R-So., Quarterback
It was great to have teams today and compete and have two quarterbacks on each team so we were able to split quarters. It was great to be out there, ya know.
How was it to be involved in a game situation finally?
It was fun. Practice gets old beating up on each other. Being out here on Rentschler Field with all these fans was a great day. Just comin out relaxed and getting to play.
How do you think you did today?
There were some things I did good and some things I need to improve on. I gotta take care of the ball, that’s the main thing a quarterback has to do. He touches the ball every play so he’s gotta take care of it and not give the defense turnovers. We have a great defense. Their gonna get us turnovers and stop people and we have to protect the ball.
What are your thoughts on the media saying that you basically won the job today?
It’s never as good as it seems and it’s never as bad as it seems. We’ll go back and watch the film and see what we need to improve on. Everybody did good things, everybody did some bad things. That’s part of being a quarterback. You’ve got to learn from mistakes.
Shakim Phillips, #8 R-So., Wide Receiver
Do you have any thoughts on the quarterback competition?
They are all good quarterbacks. I don’t have anything to do with it. That’s Coach DeLeone and coach Pasqualoni’s decision. I’m out here just trying to make plays and contribute.
On rooming with Chandler Whitmer:
We connected well. We always throw together, whether It’s six in the morning or nine at night. Just working together. It’s good to have a quarterback as a roommate. You get that connection.
Who initiates working out late or early in the morning?
Whoever is up just wakes the other guy up to get going. We get in there and work together.
Can you talk about developing chemistry with Chandler Whitmer?
Even just going through the 15 practices together, we’ve got connections with all the quarterbacks. That helped us out a lot. We just keep practicing and taking reps. You get better chemistry.
