EAST HARTFORD, Conn. - Redshirt sophomore quarterback Chandler Whitmer(Newnan, Ga.) threw two touchdown passes in his two quarters of playing time to lead the White team to a 14-5 victory over the Blue squad in the 2012 University of Connecticut Spring football game at Rentschler Field that signifies the end of spring practice.

SNY will show a replay of the UConn Spring Game on Sunday at 7:30 p.m. and on its Connecticut feed on Monday at 11:00 a.m. and Wednesday at 7:00 a.m.

Whitmer completed 18 of 27 pass attempts for 187 yards and was the standout on the offense in the contest. He connected with redshirt senior tight end John Delahunt (Ottawa, Ont.) on a 14-yard scoring pass with two seconds remaining before halftime. The touchdown capped a seven-play, 48-yard drive that included two receptions for 27 yards by redshirt sophomore wide receiver Shakim Phillips(Paterson, N.J.). Phillips had five catches for 55 yards receiving in the game.

Whitmer capped the scoring in the fourth quarter when he hit redshirt freshman tight end Sean McQuillan (Glastonbury, Conn.) on an eight-yard touchdown pass with 8:34 to play in the contest. Whitmer connected on two pass completions to senior wide receiver Nick Williams(East Windsor, N.J.) for 35 yards on that drive. Williams finished with game-high totals of six receptions and 87 yards receiving.

The contest was dominated by defense as the two offenses were held to minus-32 yards rushing on 46 attempts. The defensive star of the game was redshirt senior defensive tackle Ryan Wirth (Medford, N.J.), who recorded 4.5 sacks among his 5.5 tackles for loss, and recorded a safety in the first quarter when he sacked sophomore quarterback Michael Nebrich(Burke, Va.) in the end zone to give the Blue squad a 5-0 lead.

Redshirt freshman cornerback David Stevenson(Stone Mountain, Ga.) had a game-best 10 tackles and snagged two interceptions for good measure.

Nebrich completed five of nine passes for 48 yards, with two interceptions for the White squad, playing the first and third quarters. Redshirt senior quarterback Johnny McEntee (Fullerton, Calif.) completed four of 15 passes for 46 yards and one interception, while freshman signal caller Casey Cochran(Monroe, Conn.) was 5-of-14 for 38 yards for the Blue team.

Leading rushers in the game were redshirt junior Martin Hyppolite (Wakefield, Mass.) and redshirt sophomore Lyle McCombs(Staten Island, N.Y.), who each had 25 yards on 10 carries.

The Huskies will open play in the 2012 season when they entertain Massachusetts, who will be in its first year as a member of the Mid-American Conference and the FBS, at Rentschler Field on August 30.
