Sept. 15, 2013
Head Coach Paul Pasqualoni
"We did not have enough plays on stopping (quarterback) CJ Brown tonight. They had a big night running the ball. We had a hard time tackling tonight. We didn't have a sack against him tonight. We knew coming into the game that he was going to be a good player. It was frustrating. We just didn't make enough big plays to Maryland's credit. They made more plays than we did tonight. I thought our wide receivers played well.
On the defense in the third quarter and the run game:
"On that first drive, we had a hard time stopping them. It was hard stopping them. Our running game this week, we just didn't create enough open space and keep the guys up front moving. We were unable to move their defense backwards We just were not able to get it going tonight and that was frustrating.
Thought on next week's game versus Michigan:
"It presents us with a great opportunity against a very good team. We shall see. I expect our kids to be up for the challenge and come in tomorrow and begin working hard and focusing in on our next task at hand."
UConn Player Quotes
Safety Obi Melifonwu
On the result of the game
"It's devastating but we have to come back next week and prepare for the game."
On the team's effort tonight
"Everyone gave a great effort on both offense and defense. Everyone battled and no one had their heads down."
On what coach Pasqualoni said after the game
"He said to keep our heads up and focus on our mistakes and learn from them."
On his interception in the first quarter
"I was reading the qb and I broke on the ball and he overthrew it and scooped it up."
Linebacker Yarwin Smallwood
On the mindset after the game
" It's tough we've been working hard all offseason. It hurts but we just have to make sure we're working towards the next game."
On moving forward
"We have to pick our heads up and get ready to work and go into the film room and fix our mistakes."
Quarterback Chandler Whitmer
On the game tonight
"Obviously it's frustrating. I can't point the fingers we just didn't get it done as a team."
On preparing for Towson
"We respected them. We knew they were a great opponent we just didn't come out clicking like we needed to."
On Towson's pass rush
"They were getting good pass rush. Maybe I could have got the ball out quicker."
On not finishing drives
"To take a nice drive down to the one and then not be able to finish it's frustrating. That's something we harped on last year. We have to finish drives and we didn't get it done and it's frustrating."
Wide receiver Geremy Davis
On his game tonight "We played well but not good enough because we still lost. I don't care about personal stats the most important stat obviously is to win."
Head Coach Randy Edsall
"I'm very pleased for our team, to come in here in a tough venue at Rentschler Field and come away with the victory given some of the adversity we faced. I give UConn credit, they caused some of that adversity. But I thought our guys really hung in there and made plays when they needed to. I'm very proud of them for that. We're 3-0, first time since 2001. We got some things we need to improve, but overall we did well. They never lost their composure, we had good offensive production. I thought we gave up too many yards, but we played well overall.
What emotions did you feel coming back here?
"This is a very special place to me and my family. I appreciate everything everyone did for me and the program here. When I was here, what we were able to accomplish was very special and I'll never forget that, it is very memorable. It's good to come back and have another great memory, but this time it's on the Maryland sideline. I'll never lose the memories I've had here.
CJ Brown's performance.
"You saw what he did, he runs well, throws well, and distracts the defense. He has some real good weapons with them. The line kept him on his feet and he did a great job. We have great skill players and they all contributed."
Wide receiver Stefon Diggs
On the slow start:
"We made some good plays at the start, but so did they. We didn't get off to a real strong start as we're used to, but we were able to rebound after that point.
Only only having 13 points at half:
"We just knew we had to execute better and come out stronger in the second half. We made some mistakes in the first half, but when we had our backs against the wall, we never folded. We played well through the adversity.
On offensive success:
"Obviously, I think CJ is the difference and also our line has been really great, so it's been the collective unit. We're just trying to get better each time we're out there.
On C.J. Brown:
"He can run the ball, he can throw the ball, he can bring the defense in, he does just about everything.
Quarterback C.J. Brown:
On his rushing touchdown:
"It was a front zone read. The defensive linemen crashed and I was able to hit the crease and take it to the house. It was a big play for us, turned the momentum around. That was the spark we needed and we were able to come out with the win. It wasn't pretty, but we did what we had to do to get the job done.
On the offense:
"We're just executing, I mean today wasn't pretty. We had too many turnovers. Yeah, we had 500 yards but we didn't have many points on the board. We were only getting field goals, we were shooting ourselves in the foot. We can't do that when we play other teams this year.
On Edsall addressing his return to UConn:
"That was unspoken, it was water under the bridge as far as we were concerned. The biggest thing was they beat us last year and so we owed them. That was our mentality. To come in here, our first game on the road facing some adversity, had some turnovers in a pretty hostile environment, but we still got it done.
On only having 13 points at the half:
"Yeah absolutely. We had too many turnovers, that's the biggest thing. We were moving the ball, but again, the biggest killer when it came to stopping us was ourselves. You can't do that when you play the rest of the year playing good teams."
