Postgame Quotes

UConn Head Coach Randy Edsall

Opening Statement

It’s good to win. Great win for us. We were able to get to 1-0 in the third quarter. Got a two-game winning streak. Kids played hard. Kept battling all the way so were going to enjoy it but also there were some things that took place in that game that we’ll be able to correct and get better because we did have opportunities to put them away and we didn’t take advantage of that. And then just got to figure out what happened there in the last five mins but really proud of our guys in terms of how they hung in there. I will not comment on any officiating. I’ve been fined once in my career and with the state budget and everything else we don’t have the money to pay a fine so please do not ask me any questions. My mother was here today and she wouldn’t have liked some of my language that I used on the sideline so I’ll leave it at that and fire away.

On the third quarter

I thought we played pretty well there. We took advantage of some opportunities and again, it’s one of those things where I know there’s another team on the other side that’s playing but I’m still searching for us to get that consistency for four quarters. But we played very very well there. We made a big play there that we thought we could make and defensively for three quarters, well three and a half quarters, three and three quarters, we played very very well and then we kind of I don’t know, I’ll have to watch the film.

On the senior defensive players

I think the one thing is, anytime you implement some new things and maybe things like fundamentals and techniques that guys might not have been used to playing, I think it takes a little bit of time to get comfortable and to feel comfortable. One thing is the defensive staff, they just go in the room and shut the door and they don’t listen to all the outside noise or anything along those lines and just believe in what we do and the kids believed and as they started believing and seeing success, you know that helps you build your confidence and I think that’s something that happens. I told them in the locker room, I said, you know we had a chance to put them away, we didn’t and now it’s a win and we will enjoy it, got to take care of our bodies but we have to go back and fix some of those mistakes that we made really in all three phases and again, just try to get better for next week.

Defensive Back Brayden Brown

On Junior Joseph

I mean Junior is one of the guys that freshman always look up to because you can tell it means a lot to him. It’s his senior year and he’s one of the guys that you want to play hard for because you know it’s their last ride. He’s going to give it everything he has so he makes you want to give everything you have. He’s one of the leaders on the team no doubt.

On back to back wins

Winning at home was a big thing for us because of what happened last time at home we didn’t have a very good showing. I feel like we are coming together as a family more than just a team on defense. We’re spending more time with each other outside, getting to know each other and now were playing for each other rather than playing just to play and its showing and it feels good.

On being aggressive on the snap

I think it’s confidence from both players and coaches. Players are showing more confidence in practice and the coaches are having more confidence in us because we’re doing what they’re coaching us and were staying coachable so I think it goes both ways.

Wide Receiver Hergy Mayala

On take aways from today

Oh yeah definitely. We got the win. We’re going to have to watch the film and correct the mistakes and we have to get better for next week because we have a big opponent coming down here.

On being able to spread the ball around

We have a tight group of guys that just want to go out there and make plays and [Bryant] Shirreffs is giving us the chances to make the plays and for us just to go out there and get it.

On the freshman and their roles

I help them a lot. Masons confidence went through the sky. Keyion [Dixon], Q [Quayvon Skanes], all of them. It’s just that we’re a group and we don’t depend on one person so whenever somebody goes out somebody else has to step up.

Tulsa Head Coach Phillip Montgomery

On moving the ball down the field at the end of the game:

"Well you just never know, but that is your plan. We go over the procedures with your guys and we have a lot of young guys out there and they haven't been in that situation before, but I thought they handled it well. You have to hope there is enough time, you don't know if that is the case or not, but I thought our guys did a good job of executing there and gave us a chance. When you are in the end zone with a last second play you have a chance and at that point you are just hoping for."

How we felt during the last seconds of the game:

"You know a lot of things are going on right there and I am sitting there right on the sideline and Luke (Skipper) is kind of backing up towards me and I am telling him you have to let it go. I thought he made a good read and found [Keenen Joseph] and [Justin Hobbbs] over there and all you want to do is give those guys an opportunity to come up with the ball. I thought he did that and you hope you get a break right there and made that catch or get a call that extends the game a little bit."

On UConn's defense:

"They didn't really do anything different schematically that was different than what we have seen. They were using their nickel (defense) or whatever you want to call it and they were using their safety to help on the run stuff. We knew that going in that that was probably going to be the case so we have to do a better job executing. You know we would have a five yard run and then a two yard loss, you just can't have those things. You have to be consistent."
