PHILADELPHIA – With the 56th overall pick and 24th pick of the Second Round, the Oakland Raiders selected UConn safety Obi Melifonwu.
Melifonwu is the first UConn player picked in the second round since Kendall Reyes in the 2012 Draft (San Diego Chargers).
Melifonwu led UConn in tackles this past season with 118 and had a team-leading four interceptions. He is 14th in the country in tackles per game and second in the American Athletic Conference. Melifonwu was also ranked 23rd in the country in interceptions.
He tied a school single-game record last Saturday with 24 tackles against Tulane. Melifonwu also earned All-New England honors this past season.
Melifonwu joins 18 former Huskies that are currently on NFL rosters. UConn has now had 41 players drafted in the NFL Draft and 21st Husky drafted since 2009.
