TAMPA, Fla. (May 24, 2005) – Former University of Connecticut quarterback Shane Stafford, now with the Arena Football League’s Tampa Bay Storm, has been named the league’s overall Player of the Week by the Arena Football League Writers Association and the AFL Offensive Player of the Week by the league office. It is the third time he has won each honor in 2005 and Stafford is the only player to have won the AFLWA’s weekly award more than once this season. Stafford previously won both awards after games on Jan. 30 and March 6.

On Sunday, Stafford completed 26-of-38 passes for 277 yards with five touchdowns and no interceptions as he guided the Storm to a 78-53 road win over the Columbus Destroyers to clinch the National Conference’s final playoff berth. Stafford also ran for three touchdowns against Columbus, making him directly responsible for eight scores in all during the game. For the 16-game regular season which concluded on Sunday, Stafford’s 4,522 passing yards (on a 50-yard field) ranked third in the AFL. He completed 405 of his 631 passes (64.2%) for 83 touchdowns against just 14 interceptions.

In his four year career for the Huskies from 1995-98, Stafford started 38 games and completed 563-of-1026 passes for 8,975 yards with 73 touchdowns and 29 interceptions. He was a catalyst behind the program’s first ever postseason appearance as he helped lead UConn to the quarterfinals of the 1998 NCAA Division I-AA Playoffs. He remains in the top three of most UConn career passing categories, alongside Matt DeGennaro (1987-90) and Dan Orlovsky (2001-04).

Stafford’s Storm will face the Georgia Force on Sunday afternoon, May 29, in the AFL Divisional Playoffs at Philips Arena in Atlanta. The playoffs will culminate in ArenaBowl XIX on June 12 at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas.
