Wain Named To Ray Guy Award Watch List

July 7, 2016

AUGUSTA, Ga. - University of Connecticut redshirt senior punter Justin Wain (Wilmington, N.C.) has been named to the Pre-Season Watch List for the 2016 Ray Guy Award, which honors the nation’s top collegiate punter and is presented by the Augusta Sports Council.

Wain becomes the fourth Husky named to a Watch List during this preseason joining redshirt senior Bobby Puyol (North Palm Beach, Fla.) on the Lou Groza Award list (top kicker in the country), junior cornerback Jamar Summers (Orange, N.J.) on the Chuck Bednarik Award list (top defensive player in the country) and redshirt sophomore Ryan Crozier (Plantation, Fla.) on the Rimington Trophy list (top center in the country).

UConn is just one of seven schools nationally to have both their kicker and punter on the Groza and Guy watch lists.

Ten semifinalists for the Guy Award will be announced on November 11 and the three finalists will be released on November 22. The winner will be announced on December 8 during the Home Depot College Football Awards Show.

Wain has been UConn’s starting punter for the past two seasons and last year averaged 38.2 yards per punt with 22 inside the 20-yard line and 39 that were fair caught. He had a season-long punt of 53 yards against Marshall (Dec. 26) in St. Petersburg Bowl and two of his five punts were inside the 20 during the bowl game. In UConn’s win over nationally-ranked Houston (Nov. 21), Wain had nine punt and six were within the 20 and six were fair caught.

Wain is an allied health science major at UConn and is a two-time member of the American Athletic Conference All-Academic team.
