STORRS, Conn. – Four members of the University of Connecticut football team have been named to seven major award watch lists over the course of the 2012 preseason.  Ryan Griffin, Lyle McCombs, Sio Moore and Trevardo Williams have each been chosen to represent the Huskies as candidates for multiple awards.

Griffin, a redshirt-senior tight end from Londonderry, N.H., was placed on both the Mackey Award and Rotary Lombardi Award watch lists.  The Mackey is awarded to the nation’s top tight end, while the Lombardi honors the nation’s top lineman or linebacker.  Griffin was named a Second Team All-BIG EAST selection in 2011 and ranked third on UConn with 33 receptions, three for touchdowns, and 499 yards.

McCombs, a redshirt-sophomore from Staten Island, N.Y., earned a spot on both the Maxwell and Doak Walker Award watch lists.  The Maxwell Award is given to the country’s top player in college football and the Doak Walker is awarded to the nation’s top running back.  In 2011, McCombs was named a Freshman All-American by the Football Writer’s Association of America and was a Second Team All-BIG EAST selection.  He ranked 29th in the nation and second in the conference as well as second among the country’s freshmen with 95.92 rushing yards per game.  McCombs totaled 1,151 yards to become the 14th Husky player to reach the 1,000-yard marker.  He average 4.2 yards per carry and ran for seven touchdowns.

Moore, a redshirt-senior from Apex, N.C., was honored with a spot on both the Lombardi Award and Butkus Award watch lists.  The Butkus Award is given annually to the nation’s top linebacker and recognizes 51 players on its watch list in the preseason to honor the jersey number of Dick Butkus.  Moore finished third on Connecticut with 86 tackles in 2011.  He led the team with 16 tackles for a loss and was second with 6.5 sacks.

Williams was named to three award watch lists.  The senior defensive end from Bridgeport, Conn. landed on the Bednarik and Lombardi Award watch lists as well as the Bronko Nagurski Trophy watch list.  The Bednarik and Nagurski are each awarded to the nation’s best defensive player.  Williams was honored as a Second Team All-BIG EAST selection as a junior after leading UConn with 12.5 sacks and was second in tackles for loss with 15.0.  He totaled 43 tackles on the season, while ranking second in the country and first in the BIG EAST with 1.04 sacks per game.  Williams’ 19 career sacks currently rank him sixth all-time at Connecticut.
